This did not happen overnight. This happened through years of hard work, thousands of words, networking, and good timing. To my aspiring writers, I started looking for an agent after my first book, THE RESEMBLANCE. I got so close many times and then eventually, discouraged by the process, stopped trying. But when I reflect, I think it was more of a refinement of understanding cold querying and how strong your portfolio truly has to be to obtain representation. It's not only that you're searching for an agent but that the agent is searching for you. One good book, if you're supremely lucky and the stars align, might get you an agent. But you're much better off waiting until you have IP under your belt and a full repertoire of works to pitch to improve your chances of responses. The point comes down to: never stop writing. When one project is finished, move on to the next because the next may be the best yet.
